Design and Technology

Design and Technology

Design and technology at our school is taught in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum. Our curriculum is designed to provide pupils with opportunities to develop creativity, practical skills and technical knowledge, while learning how design and technology shapes the world around them.

Our design and technology curriculum offers full coverage across six key areas: Cooking and nutrition, Mechanical systems, Digital world, Structures, Textiles and Electrical systems. These areas are carefully planned across year groups to ensure children build skills and knowledge progressively, revisiting and developing key concepts as they move through the school.

Design and technology is taught through engaging units of work which follow a clear design process. Pupils are encouraged to investigate, design, make and evaluate products for real purposes and intended users. Through practical experiences, children learn to use a range of tools, materials and techniques safely and effectively, while developing problem solving skills and an understanding of how products are designed and made.

Cooking and nutrition is an important part of our curriculum, helping pupils to understand where food comes from, develop basic cooking skills and learn about healthy and balanced diets. Across all areas, pupils are encouraged to reflect on their designs, make improvements and understand how design choices affect outcomes.

Our design and technology curriculum supports our school vision of ‘Preparing for life’s big adventure’. By developing independence, resilience and creativity, pupils are equipped with practical skills and confidence that will support them beyond the classroom. Design and technology helps children to think innovatively, solve real world problems and approach challenges with curiosity and determination as they prepare for the future.
